Alton Water

Alton Water is a fantastic day out with the kids to enjoy a bike ride in the stunning Suffolk countryside.

A relatively flat 8-mile circuit of the reservoir gives you fantastic views and a chance to get back to nature.

Look out for the sailing boats, windsurfers and kayaks as you ride around the beautiful man-made lake.

Alton Water is located six miles south of Ipswich between Stutton and Holbrook.

Let’s Pedal

Begin your ride at the Alton Water Visitor Centre and head clockwise around the reservoir following the numbered signposts with the water on your right.

After nearly three miles you will come to a road where you turn right over the bridge onto a gravel track. Follow the signposts.

Some of the sections on the north side of the reservoir are a little steep, but nothing unmanageable.

Finally, cross the dam and follow the shore of the lake back to the visitor centre.
