Cowes to Newport

Explore the beautiful Isle of Wight by bike straight from the ferry terminal in Cowes and cycle through to Newport in the centre of the island.

Cowes to Newport is a short 4-mile ride suitable for all cyclists alongside the River Medina. See hundreds of moored yachts on the river and around Cowes particularly during Cowes Week, one of the longest-running regattas in the world.

Cowes and Newport are found on the Isle of Wight.

Cowes is in the far north of the island and is home to the main ferry port. Newport is in the centre of the island.

Let’s Pedal

The Cowes to Newport cycle route begins on Arctic Road on the west side of the River Medina. Look out for the signs for ‘Cowes Cycle Route’ and ‘Cowes to Newport Cycleway’.

Arctic Road is accessible from the Southampton line ferry terminal (located on the east side of the river) by using the East Cowes-Cowes Chain Ferry turning left onto Bridge Road, south of Newport Road and left again on Arctic Road. The off-road trail is located at the far southern end of the road.

The trail runs parallel to the river until you arrive in Newport.

If you wish to complete the coast-to-coast route, then head through Newport and on to Sandown. Follow the NCN 23 route signs joining Blackhouse Quay which becomes Little London passing under the bridge. Go left on Sea Street to the end and join the cycle path south on the Medina Way turning off at Furrlongs. Take the first right (at the sign for Matalan) and before the car park turn off the road onto Connie’s Way cycleway signposted as NCN 23 to Sandown. Follow the path to Shide Path, turn left to reach Shide Road being careful to cross the road and joining the Newport to Sandown route.
