North Dorset Trailway

The North Dorset Trailway is a continually extending trail that currently runs from Blandford Forum to Sturminster Newton. This cycle ride follows the course of the Stour Valley and the former Somerset and Dorset Railway line. You will pass the recently renovated Shillingstone railway station and view the beautiful Dorset countryside.


The North Dorset Trailway is located north-east of Bournemouth and extends for 9 miles from Blandford Forum to Sturminster Newton.

Let’s Pedal

Start at either end of the North Dorset Trailway.

At Blandford Forum, the route begins in the Station Court Car Park – follow the path under the black foot bridge marked Trailway.

From Sturminster Newton, start in the east corner of the Station Road Car Park.

Follow the path to the other end. The route is very well signposted with North Dorset Trailway and NCN 25 (and NCN 250 near Sturminster Newton).

The North Dorset Trailway is part of National Cycle Network (NCN) routes 25 and 250 from Blandford Forum to Sturminster Newton.

Blandford Forum is reached from the south on NCN 25 from Tarrant Crawford.

Sturminster Newton is accessible from Hinton St Mary on NCN 253.
