Hamsterley Forest

Hamsterley Forest is a 2,000 hectare woodland with four mountain biking trails for riders of all abilities and found in Upper Weardale, County Durham.

A popular destination for cyclists who enjoy the natural setting and the diverse wildlife including red squirrels and roe deer, as well as a wide variety of birdlife in the area.

Hamsterley Forest is managed by the Forestry Commission.


Hamsterley Forest is located approximately 2 miles to the west of Hamsterley village, south-west of Durham and west of Bishop Auckland in County Durham.

Let’s Pedal

Four mountain bike trails available:

Grove Link Cycle Trail – 1.5 miles / 2.4 km

Ideal for families, this ride along the Bedburn Valley winds its way along hillsides taking you through enchanting woodland  and over bridges that span the ravines.

Blue Trail – 9 miles / 14.5 km

For riders with basic mountain biking skills, this ride is mainly on hard, compact forest roads.

Red Trail – 14 miles / 22.5 km

There may not be many technical aspects to this trail, but it is long with lots of climbs to overcome.

Black Trail – 7 miles / 11.3 km

A technically challenging trail with steep climbs and twisting single track that will test your abilities.

How to get here

By Car

Hamsterley Forest is accessible from Darlington on the A68 then west on Saunders Avenue to Hamsterley and then Bedburn Road to Bedburn.

Opening Times

The main car park at Bedburn (adjacent to the toilet block) is open all day. Barriers on the forest drive and forest drive car parks are open from 8am to 5pm. Access to the forest on foot 24 hours a day. Over Christmas period, main car park and toilets open as usual.
